Legislation Will Speed Election Results and Secure Arizona’s Elections
Phoenix, AZ – The Arizona GOP is calling on Governor Katie Hobbs to sign AZ 2703, a critical election integrity measure that was voted out of the House yesterday and is expected to clear the Senate in the coming days. The bill has received strong support from election officials, including the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, the Maricopa County Recorder, and the Association of Counties, yet Governor Hobbs has indicated she intends to veto it.
AZ 2703 introduces key reforms that will improve election security, streamline the ballot process, and ensure Arizonans receive election results in a timely manner. The bill:
- Enhances In-Person Early Voting – Converts the three days of emergency voting (Saturday, Sunday, Monday before Election Day) into additional in-person early voting.
- Ends Last-Minute Mail Ballot Drop-Offs – Requires voters to drop off their mail ballots by 7:00 PM on the Friday before Election Day. After this deadline, voters in 14 counties must show ID to drop off their ballots and receive an "ID Verified" stamp, eliminating the need for signature verification. In Maricopa County, early ballots will be tabulated on-site from Saturday through Election Day. – Requires voters to drop off their mail ballots by 7:00 PM on the Friday before Election Day. - Strengthens Voter Address Verification – Mandates that voters confirm their address with election officials every two years in counties with over 500,000 residents and every four years in smaller counties before mail ballots are sent out.
- Increases Transparency for Late Ballot Drop-Offs – Voters without ID who wish to drop off a mail ballot after Friday at 7:00 PM must take it directly to the county recorder’s office.
- Expands Voting Locations – Requires public schools to be used as polling places, increasing accessibility for voters.
Maricopa County election officials have stated that, with these reforms in place, 95% of election results will be reported on election night, restoring public trust and eliminating unnecessary delays in ballot counting.
Shelby Busch, Arizona GOP Delegation Chair, questioned why Governor Hobbs would oppose such a widely supported measure. "Why wouldn’t Katie Hobbs sign this bill? The only reason to oppose it is to keep election processes chaotic and unaccountable. What are election officials trying to hide?" Busch said.
With bipartisan backing and support from election administrators across the state, AZ 2703 presents a common-sense solution to strengthen election integrity and ensure every legal vote is counted fairly and efficiently.
