Dozens of community members, neighbors and area stakeholders set for emergency community meeting tonight to voice concerns about out-of-control development and oppose the rezoning of Northshore/Harvey set for February 26th vote
Knoxville, TN – (February 19, 2024) – Neighbors of Knoxville, a united coalition of Knoxville residents is set to hold an emergency community meeting tonight to discuss plans for proposed rezoning of Northshore/Harvey, a project set for a Knox County Comission vote on Monday, February 26th.
The proposed rezoning of the Northshore/Harvey development by Cook Bros. Homes has sparked a wave of concern and opposition among residents of Knoxville. The "Neighbors of Knoxville" coalition has organized to address the recent rezoning application, citing serious concerns about overdevelopment in Knoxville.
The surge in population density resulting from the proposed rezoning exacerbates the already pressing issue of overcrowded schools, compromising the quality of education and straining resources. Additionally, the ongoing issue of overdevelopment has strained infrastructure beyond capacity, leading to alarming traffic conditions on Northshore Road, one of Tennessee's deadliest stretches, with a shocking increase in traffic accidents and fatalities. Emergency services are already struggling to meet demand, with residents experiencing unacceptable wait times for critical assistance in life-or-death situations.
The potential rezoning threatens to encroach upon the last remaining agricultural, farm, or forest land in Knoxville, posing significant environmental risks such as habitat destruction and loss of biodiversity. The absence of accessible healthcare, educational resources, and employment opportunities will result in hardship for those who move into this development.
In response to these multifaceted concerns, the "Neighbors of Knoxville" coalition is hosting an emergency community meeting on Monday, February 19th at 7:00pm at the Farragut Community Center. This meeting provides an opportunity for residents to come together, share their perspectives, and engage in constructive dialogue about the future of our neighborhood. Attendees will have the chance to discuss the potential impacts of the proposed development, strategize on opposing it, and collaborate on effective advocacy methods.
"We urgently need your presence at our community meeting to address the recent rezoning application for the Northshore/Harvey development," said Mike Potesta, a representative of the "Neighbors of Knoxville" coalition. "Your voice is crucial in shaping our community's future and addressing issues like traffic congestion and environmental impact."
All members of the media and the public are invited to attend the emergency community meeting and learn more about the concerns surrounding the Northshore/Harvey rezoning.
